Stripe Just Bought the Company That Decides Which AI Model Gets Your Money
What happened: Stripe has agreed to acquire OpenRouter — the routing layer roughly 8 million developers use to switch between 400+ AI models through one API — in a deal reported between $7B and $8B+ depending on the outlet. OpenRouter was valued at $1.3B three months ago.
Why it matters: Stripe already runs token-based billing for OpenAI, Anthropic, and NVIDIA through its Metronome acquisition. Owning the layer that decides which model wins a request too gives it visibility — and leverage — over both sides of AI spend. If your stack touches more than one AI provider, some of that spend now flows through Stripe twice.

1. SpaceX's AI coding land-grab keeps going. Fresh off its $60B acquisition of Cursor, SpaceX reportedly approached Cognition (the team behind the Devin coding agent) about a deal too. Cognition's CEO publicly said the company is "not for sale" — call this one stalled, not dead. Either way, SpaceX now owns one of the top AI coding platforms outright.
2. Microsoft patched a one-click Copilot vulnerability. Security firm Varonis disclosed a chain of three bugs (CVE-2026-24301, nicknamed "CoSnitch," CVSS 8.8) that let a single crafted link make Copilot Personal silently pull data from connected Gmail, Drive, and Calendar accounts — and write instructions into Copilot's memory that survived password resets. Microsoft shipped a fix August 18. No evidence of exploitation before the patch, but if you or a client run Copilot Personal with connected apps, it's worth a memory check.
3. NVIDIA wants equity in a company it already pays. NVIDIA is reportedly in talks to invest in Mercor, the AI data-labeling startup, at a $20B valuation — double where it stood in October. NVIDIA already pays Mercor tens of millions a quarter for the expert-labeled data behind its open-source Nemotron models.

Anthropic is racing toward an October IPO — investor meetings are already underway ahead of a listing that could value the company north of $1 trillion.
OpenAI looks more likely to wait until 2027. Its CFO has reportedly told staff to expect that timeline, citing $600B+ in compute commitments.
Correction, if you've seen this elsewhere: "Sonnet 5 pricing jumps to $3/$15 on September 1" is out of date. Anthropic made the $2/$10 rate permanent in mid-August and cancelled that increase.
Claude 3 Haiku goes dark on Vertex AI today. Google's shutdown date has been August 23 all along — that's today, a Sunday. If a pipeline still points at it, today's the day it breaks.
